Walking and Hiking by the Lough Derg

One of the most satisfying ways to appreciate the beauty of the Lough Derg area is by walking and hiking on some of the beautiful walks and hiking trails from Waymarked Ways, Looped walks, Linear trails, Guided tours and Scenic Historical routes.

Ballycuggaran Forest to Moylussa

Located only 4.2 kilometers and a 5-minute drive from Killaloe Hotel and Spa – Ballycuggaran Forest to Moylussa is a 10.5 kilometre out and back trail. A steep ascent at the top brings you to a boardwalk which can be followed along to the summit. Moylussa is the highest point in Co Clare and the summit sits at a height of 531.6m. Enjoy the exquisite views of Lough Derg and the rolling hills of Killaloe and Ballina. Dogs are also welcome to use this trail, so don’t forget your furry friends who will certainly enjoy this day out!

Portumna Forest Park

If you are up for an adventure through narrow forest trails and along the lakeshore, Portumna Forest Park is the place to be. With open woodlands including Yews and Junipers, you can count your luck to run into red squirrels, fallow deer, badgers and the occasional fox!

Dartfield Equestrian Centre

On beautiful 350 acres expanse of parkland, visitors are welcome to explore the varied walking trails, see the farm animals, participate in activities such as horse riding, sheep dog demonstrations, clay pigeon shootings and also visit the museum with displays of vintage Farm Machinery and Carriages.

Millenium Cross Walk

Located near Portroe in County Tipperary, the Millenium Cross Walk is a 3.1 kms comfortable back trails walk that is ideal for all the people who wish to partake in a lovely walk and view the breath-taking scenery of Lough Derg and the surrounding countryside. Take your dogs along for this one and they will have the time of their life!

Tountinna and the Graves of Leinstermen

The Graves of the Leinster Men Looped Walk is located near Portroe, ideal for hiking, running and nature trips. Diving into its history, it is the place where the men of Leinster and their King died at the hands of Brian Boru’s soldiers around 1000 AD. Explore this spectacular walk with views of the Lough Derg from the summit of Tountinna.
